This really is a super dvd which gives an excellent portrayal of what life is like for a working artist. It’s not about sitting around and waiting for inspiration but about consistent effort every day. This is not a tutorial dvd but you will learn a lot by watching it and you can’t fail to be inspired by the work ethic of Ken. if you’ve never heard of him don’t let that put you off, you will soon come to like him, and you’ll learn everything you need to know about the daily life of a working artist. I really enjoyed it. It’s on sale at the Tate for £15.00 but you can buy it here now for £12.50, there’s limited copies so don’t delay on this one. I’ll let the co-producer tell you more about it below.

When my artist friend Neale Worley RP NEAC suggested to me that we make a documentary about his mentor from the Royal Academy Schools, Ken Howard, I asked him who would want to watch it. His reply was, ‘Anyone who wants to understand what being an artist is about.’

Our documentary, ‘The Way I see It’ tracks the life and work of one of Britain’s most successful painters. Ken studied art in the turbulent late 50s and came though that era of experimentation without being tempted to move away from what he wanted to do. He knew early on that he had his language. For him, light was everything. Capture light and you capture the essence of the subject.

We were given amazing access to Ken while he worked in his studios in London, Cornwall and Venice. He talks frankly and engagingly about his life. He was as the first official war artist since the first world war he had to find ways to capture the truth and reality of a soldier’s life in Northern Ireland. He illustrated telephone directories in the 1970s.

He works both in the studio and air en plein. His output is prolific. He only works for an hour and a half on any canvas because after that the light has changed. We learn about his series painting; multiple canvases of the same view, one every hour until the light moves.

Limited Copies Available Buy It Now; Click HERE

He talks us though the incredibly moving ‘Raw War’, which portrayed a dramatically different side to his style when it was hung in last year’s Royal Academy exhibition. See Ken in the studio explaining what moved him to paint it and the technique that created the picture.

This is not a typical art tutorial DVD although it is impossible to listen to a man with Ken’s experience and not learn. We gain understanding of the ‘halo of light’ around a model, how tone generates light and the importance of good draughtsmanship.

Watching the creation of several pictures we discover much about his approach and experience. As a tutor, Ken encouraged the student to see and feel much more than he slaved over brushstrokes or the rule of thirds. From him we learn passion, dedication and perseverance along with the sheer hard graft of being a successful artist.

Perhaps most fundamentally Ken shares the simple fact that you must paint a picture for yourself. Be in love with your subject and that love will transmit from the finished canvas and ultimately find an audience. These are valuable lessons spoken by a grandee of the British art scene; the last of the figurative painters in the Royal Academy.

Ken states at the end of the film, ‘When I see a Turner or a Velazquez I just want to pick up a brush’. After an hour with Professor Ken Howard OBE RA, you will want to do the same.

Terry Harrison brushes offer an excellent selection of watercolour brushes for the novice or experienced artist alike. Choosing brushes for the novice artist is always confusing because of the sheer amount of brushes available. I’ve seen novice watercolour painters with enough brushes to equip a small army of painters.

The truth is you just don’t need that many brushes to paint in watercolour. A small selection will equip you for all eventualities. Terry Harrison brushes cover everything you are likely to need. They are well made and each one is designed to do a specific job.

I’ve been using These brushes for well over a year now and I’m very happy with them. From the versatile one inch wide brush Golden Leaf brush which is designed to hold the paint evenly. This brush is super for painting washes and other broad stroke work.

Other Terry Harrison brushes that I would be lost without are the fantastic Golden Foliage which makes painting trees and branches a doddle. All you have to do is stipple the brush over the paper to achieve some fantastic foliage effects. Something I tried to do for ages before I got my Terry Harrison brushes and found how easy it is.

The Fan Gogh makes painting fir trees so simple it’s unbelievable. This is a fan brush but much better than the standard fan brushes, for one thing it’s thicker and holds the paint well. As well as fir trees painting grass and reeds is so easy you’ll wonder why you couldn’t do it before.

There’s so many Terry Harrison brushes to choose from that you have a brush for everything you want to paint. One of my favourites is the Deer foot stippler. Used, as the name implies, to stipple foliage effects on the paper. Like all stippler brushes the best effects occur if the brush is kept relatively dry.

My own confidence in watercolour painting improved when I started to use Terry Harrison brushes. I always struggled when painting foliage until I learned how to use the brushes. My painting has improved along with my confidence and I won’t go anywhere without my special brushes. I don’t use any other brushes because I have everything I need with my Terry Harrison brushes.

Learning to draw faces always seems to be an indomitable task for the novice drawer. When we first start to learn to draw we think drawing portraits is something we will never be able to do and we marvel at how easy experienced artists can draw a face with ease.
Most people who try to draw portraits make the mistake of trying to run before they can walk. They jump straight into the complicated parts of drawing before mastering the basics. This is why most people learning to draw give up in frustration.

Drawing portraits is a skill that requires a lot of practice and patience. It’s not as difficult as novices think. Drawing faces just requires mastering a few basic skills that you will apply to every face you draw. If you’re just starting to learn to draw portrait drawing can seem like a complicated unreachable skill for you. It isn’t but you must learn the basics of drawing first.

Someone learning to play the violin isn’t expected to pick it up and start playing instantly. They have to learn the basics and along the way they will make mistakes, this is what the learning process is about. It’s the same when we are starting to learn to draw. You must start with the basics before moving on to more complex things.

Learning to draw faces is simply a matter of mastering a number of different skills, which, at the end of the day, is all aquiring any skill is about. And don’t be fooled into thinking that being able to draw and paint is a gift we are born with, it isn’t, it’s simply a skill set that anyone can learn. An argument I hear quiet a lot for people who would like to learn to draw is that they don’t have the time. This is rubbish in this day and age.

There’s so many fantastic drawing and painting courses around that you can join for a small fee and you will be instructed on how to draw in your own home. And no matter how busy we think we are we can all find an hour or two to pursue our interests. Think how many hours you waste sitting in front of the tv. An hour a day of practicing soon adds up and you’ll be surprised at how quick your skillbase increases.

If you dream of being able to draw portraits then you can do it. It will require patience and practice but you will be able to achieve your goal if you follow some instruction and begin to practice.

Art collecting is not just for the rich and famous, art is available for everyone to enjoy,
and let’s face it we all love a good inspiring picture. Hanging pictures on your walls changes
the whole ambience of any room. The right pictures in the right colours can have a bright and
cheerful effect on a room or a calming influence. While most of us are not interested in the
techniques artists used to create special effects, we all love a good picture.

Your art collection does not have to consist of original paintings either. Reproductions and
posters are all equally valid forms of art collecting. Remember you are collecting pictures
for enjoyment and to gain pleasure from, not to brag about having spent a few million quid on
a picture just to say you own it.

Personally I can think of a lot better things to spend a few million quid on than a painting.
You can start your art collection by buying original paintings from superb artists for a
reasonable price. Remember you are buying for your own pleasure and that should be your
guiding principle when looking for good art for your home.

Ignore the art snobs. Yes the art world is full of them, a bit like the wine world. When
putting together your art collection buy what you like. If the artist is unknown so what if
you like the pictures buy it.

Reproductions can be excellent quality and well worth buying to add to your collection.
There’s plenty of excellent paintings being painted by Chinese and Indian artists for he
Western market. These are good paintings and you should take a look at them.
Building an art collection is quiet easy with the internet because virtually all practicing
Artists have their own webpages to sell their work on and much of it is surprisingly cheap.
Whether you want to create a fine art collection or a corporate art collection, you’ll have no trouble finding pictures.
Prints

Don’t be put off from buying prints for your art collection because the art snobs look
down on them. A high quality print in a professional frame, hung in the right place is a
beautiful thing and will add to the beauty of your room. You can get prints of anything from
copies of the old masters’ paintings to contemporary painters and photographers.

You could opt to buy a print of a painting that has a limited printing run which will
add to its resale value. This only matters if you are collecting art for money. This article
is about collecting art for pleasure so we won’t go there.

For very little cost you can get some great prints of all different sizes, all you
need to do then is put them into the right frame and place it in the right room and you are
away.

Art is for everyone and is meant to be enjoyed. There’s no shame in buying
reproductions and prints, for most of us it’s the only way to enjoy art. The originals of the
old masters are hanging in museums or in some rich persons vault so the only way we can enjoy
them is by reproductions.

If you’re starting an art collection ignore the snobs. The majority of them don’t know
what they’re talking about anyway. How many fakes have found their way into museums because
some so called “expert” said it was an original. Buy what you like and what will look nice in
your home and please you whenever you look at it.

This is a nice article with some good oil painting tips for the beginner to take on board. Learning to paint is just a skill and like any other skill learning to paint can be easily mastered with patience and practice.
If you want to add an oil painting to the decor of your home, you may want to make your own painting. Oil paintings can include a vibrant color, great detail, and they allow the painter to add many layers of color.

Before getting started with painting with oils, one must first purchase the necessary materials. The most essential components are a canvas, pencils, oil paints, oil medium, various brushes, and a palette.

Other important components that are not absolutely necessary are a painting easel, drawing paper, an apron, jars for cleaning solutions, cleaning solution, rags or paper towels, and newspaper or old sheets for covering the table and/or ground.

To begin, it is best to first sketch the object or scene that you prefer to paint on to drawing paper until you know exactly how your painting will look. Before drawing on the canvas you may want to paint a light “wash” over the canvas with a light beige color to add more depth to the painting. From there, draw the scene with light pencil marks on the canvas until you have it exactly how you want it to look.

Once you have the drawing prepared, you are ready to paint. It is important to start with the most basic colors in the scene that you want to paint. Unlike water colors and other paint types, oil requires many different layers placed on top of each other. For instance, if you are painting a brown building, start with a basic brown and add more colors as you continue.

As you add colors, do not focus too much on the overall picture. With oil paintings, you can look deeply into the scene that you are painting to find all sorts of “hidden” colors. You may be surprised to find reds, blues, yellows, and greens in what appeared to be a brown barn.

An important note is to try to stay relaxed and paint fluidly. Detail is good, but with oils you can stand to make small mistakes. If you are spending too much time on one part, step back and look at the overall picture. It may look just fine.

I write articles about oil painting. A great site about oil paintings, and especially wholesale oil paintings is that one.

Here’s a nice article about watercolour painting by a great artist.
The first most significant component of watercolour painting is the “water.”

Before you even start a painting, you need to be working to accommodate the properties of “water”. Paper and water do not sit well together. When wet, paper swells and stretches, which manifests as rippling and buckling. Watercolour paper therefore needs to be prepared, before painting begins, to prevent buckling.

Preparation involves “stretching”. Briefly, the paper must be soaked: 4 minutes total immersion is enough for a heavy weight paper. Next it must be stretched and secured to a support. Finally, it needs to be allowed to dry. As the paper dries, it shrinks back to its original size and, if properly secured, becomes taught and flat. This tension prevents further buckling when the paint is applied and the paper becomes wet again.

Paint “wetness” is a crucial factor in painting with watercolour. Tint strength is controlled by wetness, and not the amount of pigment used. The wetter a colour mix, the weaker the tint will be. Generally, watery washes should be applied to wet paper. Areas to be washed should first be painted-over with clean water, and this helps the pigment wash to flow and disperse more evenly.

Conversely, strong colour comes from a dryer mix of pigment, and dry mixes should normally be applied to dry paper. Dry mixes do not creep and flow, and the paint will remain exactly where you have applied it. Dry mixes generally have greater opacity, and are inherently more uniform. Areas of strong colour can be softened at their edges, and this leads me to my next point.

The water solubility of the pigment is a crucial factor in its manipulation. Water is used to carry the pigment to the areas of a painting where you want it to appear. Water can similarly be used to dissolve and remove paint from places you do not want it to be. This makes corrections, such as softening and pigment removal possible. For example “bloom” can be removed by using a damp brush (Bloom is the pooling of pigment at the edge of a wash, which appears as a darker line).

The solubility of watercolour pigment can have accidental consequences. Application of a second wash over a first will inevitably remove some of the underlying pigment. The trick here is to use this attribute to your advantage. For example, don’t draw a layout sketch with a pencil; paint it with a pale mix of an appropriate colour, and the sketch will disappear as colour washes are applied. A neutral coloured (or even a plain water) wash can be used to retrospectively soften neighbouring washes of different colours, since some of underlying colour will be dissolved and moved or removed (dependant on the wetness of your brush). Clean wet brushes move pigment: clean damp brushes remove pigment.

Most watercolour students are taught to work from light to dark: this acknowledges pigment. However, there is also a need to work from wet to dry, and this acknowledges the water. The dry washes usually need to be done last, because a subsequent wet wash over a dry application will move and lift that paint.

The second most significant part of watercolour painting is the “colours”.

Pigments are not simply different colours; they are chemically different have dissimilar characteristics in terms of their permanence, opacity, granularity and staining effect.

Reds and blues tend to be less permanent, and should be a just little overstated. After just a few weeks, they will mute down.

Some colours (some yellows for example) are more opaque than others, and this can influence colour wash sequences. For instance, crimson over yellow can look different to yellow over crimson (but the end result will depend a lot on the make and quality of the paints you are using). Cerulean blue is granular: expect to see little pools of deeper colour within a wash.

All pigments work via a combination of staining and surface deposits. Some colours enter the fibres of the paper. They stain, and are impossible to completely remove by re-wetting and dabbing away. Others dry on the surface of the paper, and are easily removed.

I could no doubt write a list of the characteristics of common colours, but I think it should suffice to advise of the need to become aware of differences between pigments.

In summary

Although watercolour painting has a lot to do with mixing colours, tonal graduation, colour depth and texture are achieved through controlling wetness: both the wetness of the paper, and the wetness of the paint.

Learning To Paint is not as difficult as many people think. The probem most people have is geting over the mental block that painting is somehow a secret art that requires special skills that you have to be born with. this is complete rubbish despite attempts by some artists to promote this view. Painting is nothing more than a skill and like all skills it can be learned by anyone who is prepared to apply themselves.

There’s no secret, it’s just applied knowledge.
One of the main problems people who want to learn to paint face is finding the time. Classes are usually on at the wrong time for working people, they tend to be populated by retired people who have plenty of time to prepare and attend classes. But what about the busy mum or working man who has to put a full shift in every day and has little time to come home and get ready to attend a class.

The good news is the advances in technology have brough painting instruction direct to your home. ypou can now learn and master paintingwithout leaving your home. Learning to paint has never been easier. I have learned and continue to learn much from Art DVDs

If you’ve always wanted to learn to paint then there’s no better time to start. You can learn in your own time in just a few half an hour segments of time from established artists using dvds and home study painitng courses I love instructional dvds, they’re a great way to learn the techniques needed to master painting.

Using them in a laptop which you can stop at any time is a great way to master all the skills required to paint. You will soon come to like the style of an artist and seek out their dvds. I like a few artists but Ray Campbell Smith is one of my favourite instructors. His instructional dvd Landscapes in Watercolour is one of the best I’ve seen. When you’re learning to paint you want to learn the theory behind the techniques not just how to hold your brush. Ray comes from the old school of watercolour painting instruction and explaines everything fully before you put brush to paper. His demonstrations on his dvds are easy to follow and well presented with some thinking added in.

I’ve seen plenty of art instructional dvds ranging from the complete rubbish to the excellent and Ray comes in at the top. The Landscapes in Watercolours dvd is not full of flashy tricks with little real content, it’s pure content, full of wonderful knowledg for the watercolour srtist. Anyone learning to paint should get this dvd, it really gives you the basics which you can build on. Of course there’s plenty of other great dvds out there, many other artists you may like.

I don’t know about you but when I’m practicing my painting I just want content from my painting instructional material, I’m not interested in artists trying to be celebrities, like a celebrity chef. I want raw knowledge, that’s what I pay for and that’s what I want. Don’t be put off learning to paint, with the amount of good quality instructional material out there it’s not as hard as you think.

Learn to paint the right way by reading this article. It is very tempting to get right on with the process of creating your next masterpiece but the truth is that it is well worth spending some time stretching your watercolor paper. The problem is that paper of less than 260 lb (356 gsm) needs to be stretched before you use it otherwise it will simply warp if you do not do so. The good news is that it is a pretty straightforward process and one you can do yourself. Read the rest of this article to learn how to do it properly.

You will need only a few things to get started. They are:

* A couple of sponges
* Some watercolor paper
* A drawing board
* Gummed brown paper tape

Remember, if you want to learn to paint you need to know how to do this procedure. Here are the steps to stretching your paper:

Step 1. Take four strips of gummed brown tape, that is one for each edge of the paper, and cut them slightly longer than the sides to which they will be attached. Put them all to one side for the moment once you have cut them.

Step 2. Soak the sheet of paper in cold water. Do this for about two minutes and allow the fibers in the paper to expand. This prepares the paper for the stretch.

Step 3. Take the sheet of paper and lift it. Very gently shake off the excess water from it and then place it upon the drawing board. The board must be lying completely flat.

Step 4. Take a clean sponge and smooth out the paper. You can try using your fingers, if you wish, but make absolutely certain that they are clean and have no grease on them. You must get the paper perfectly flat and smoothed at this stage in order for it to be smooth once it is dry. Still want to learn to paint? Read the next tip for some more help.

Step 5. Take one of the strips of gummed paper tape and moisten it. Stick it along one edge of the paper. Make sure that it is firmly attached. You want to stick the tape so that two-thirds of the tape is on the board and that one third is on the paper. This technique ensures that the paper is fastened soundly to the board and that it will not be pulled off the board as it dries.

Step 6. Work your way around all of the other sides of the sheet of paper in the exactly same fashion. Get some more help from the next step as you learn to paint

Step 7. Now leave the paper alone to dry for several hours. It needs to be away from any direct heat source. The fibers in the paper contract as the water evaporates leaving the sheet of watercolor paper smooth and flat.

Step 8. Make sure that you keep the drawing board flat while the paper dries. The water will drain to one or other edge if you do not and the paper will drive unevenly. This will lead to an unsatisfactory result for you.

Step 9. The paper will stay flat when you use it. You might think that this is not the case because you are going to make moisten it again when you paint on to it. However, the paper will never again be as damp as it was in step 2 so it will actually stay nice and flat for you.

There are some more tips to bear in mind as you learn to paint:

Avoid using hot water to soak your watercolor paper. This is because it could remove the sizing from the paper. Do not soak it for too long, either, for the same reason. Sizing is always added to watercolor paper to reduce its absorbency so you want it to stay there.

Try to use a different color sponge for smoothing the piece of paper and moistening the gummed tape. That way you will not run the risk of getting gum on your sheet of watercolor paper.

An alternative method is to staple the paper down onto the board if you do not wish to use gummed brown tape. You should remember this as you learn to paint. It will serve you well.

A nice article about sketching. Very interesting and full of good tips and advice, well worth a read.

The Concept

A sketch is a quick freehand drawing, which may or may not be called finished work. Mostly, it is made in a two-dimensional plane to record visual data for later use. Being preliminary outlining step, sketches help try out different ideas and establish a composition, before being painted or embellished finally.

The Details

Sketching is an outline of the desired work, which helps sharpen the artists’ ability to focus on the crucial elements of a subject. While, dry media, such as pencil, chalks, and pastels are the preferred tools for drawing, graphite pencils, charcoal, pen, and ink are also used. A quick watercolor work or even modeled clay may be considered sketching in broad terms. The commonest platform for drawing is paper. Certain other materials, like cardboard, plastic, leather, board, and canvas however, are also used for the purpose.

The History

During the pre-historic times, artistry found place on rocks and caves walls. By 12th-13th centuries AD, monks in European monasteries started making illuminated manuscripts, vellum, or parchment. Soon, silver was employed for sketching and drawing. Reused wooden tablets were the drawing platforms until paper was available from the 14th century onwards. It was used for both, preparatory studies and finished works.

Types of Papers

Papers come in a variety of forms, sizes, and quality ranging from cheap newspaper class up to high quality individual sheets. When wet, they differ in texture, acidity, hue, and strength. Smooth paper is apt for fine sketches, while a toothy paper holds the drawing better. Newspaper and typing paper are great for rough sketching. Acid-free archival quality paper retains the color of sketch longer than the wood pulp based paper, such as newsprint or typing paper. Tracing paper may also be used for duplicating and transferring a drawing to another platform, like paper, cloth, board, etc. Cartridge paper is a basic yet standard drawing paper, mostly sold in spiral or hardbound pads.

The Artists

Some of the most famous artists with popular sketchbooks were Leonardo da Vinci (Italian, 1452-1519), Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), Nicolas Poussin (French, 1594-1665), Antoine-Laurent (1743-94), Jean-Baptiste (French, 1744-1829), Francisco de Goya (Spain, 1746-1828), Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917), Paul Cezanne (French, 1839-1906), Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926), and Vincent Van Gogh (Dutch 1853-90). Their pages depict more thoughtful studies rather than mere artistic sketches.

The Artworks

Some prominent sketch concepts include ‘line drawing in sanguine’ by Leonardo da Vinci, ‘Orlando Furioso defeating a monster’ by Gustave Dore (French, 1832-83), two point perspective drawing, and Chiaroscuro study drawing by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905).

Painting with watercolor is fun but also difficult to master. It’s better to learn the basic skills of water color paintings and then move to the complex ones. With this article, we can have a step by step watercolor painting skills.

Step 1 – In the Watercolor Painting to always start with laying a thin wash first. This process is mainly used for painting the background and even for covering bigger areas. It can be of one color or one tone, which is called as a flat wash.

You can also use a wash which starts from dark to light color going in the downward direction, which is known as the graded wash.

Step 2 – After you do wet-on-wet technique to create unique effects, put one of the colors down and afterwards put the next color on the first color, but just take care to do this only after the first color has dried.

Step 3 – The wet-on-wet effect which you have completed will give your painting a completely different effect. Now the third step will be using a technique which is called wet-on-dry techniques.

Step 4 – Decide on the areas which you intend to keep white. Watercolor paintings are seen through and may be little difficult to work within the beginning. Don’t paint on the areas which you want to keep white and always apply a lighter wash to the painting first and then gradually do the darker washes.

Step 5 – Limit yourself in using two to three colors at a time in the beginning. If you wish to add more intense colors add it later on.

Step 6 – Create something as a center of attraction in your painting, like an object. Never place it exactly in the centre, place it a little off-center and highlight the object.

Step 7 – Inquire about some free tutorials. There are so many artists who are willing to help the beginners and give them their time. You can also look for free online tutorials by which you can gain extra knowledge, which will help you in your water color painting.

Step 8 – Trust and enjoy the painting you have done. This shall build your self-confidence in painting your next projects.
