Most people who try to draw portraits make the mistake of trying to run before they can walk. They jump straight into the complicated parts of drawing before mastering the basics. This is why most people learning to draw give up in frustration.
Drawing portraits is a skill that requires a lot of practice and patience. It’s not as difficult as novices think. Someone learning to play the violin isn’t expected to pick it up and start playing instantly. They have to learn the basics and along the way they will make mistakes, this is what the learning process is about. It’s the same when we are starting to learn to draw. You must start with the basics before moving on to more complex things.
Learning to draw faces is simply a matter of mastering a number of different skills, which, at the end of the day, is all aquiring any skill is about. And don’t be fooled into thinking that being able to draw and paint is a gift we are born with, it isn’t, it’s simply a skill set that anyone can learn. An argument I hear quiet a lot for people who would like to learn to draw is that they don’t have the time. This is rubbish in this day and age.
